Setting the Record Straight
My Wife's (Tami Uhler) Employment
Several newspaper article references, and subsequent public discussion, have left an inaccurate impression with many about my wife’s current job as the Assistant Director of the Placer County Child Support Services Department. I want to ensure it is clear to all why she was hired and how the hiring process operated.
My wife of over sixteen years, Tami Uhler (then Tami Chandler), was a Prosecutor within the Office of the Placer County District Attorney when we were married in 1995. At that time I was serving my first term as an elected Placer County Supervisor. Subsequent to our marriage, I recused myself from all votes that impacted the District Attorney’s office.
In the fall of 2008, nine years after leaving her position as a Prosecutor to raise our children, my wife expressed interest in going back to work. Though she had received offers of employment from private firms doing criminal defense work, she decided that her heart was in public service.
At this time, the District Attorney’s office was publicly advertising a vacancy within their office for a District Attorney I position. Though it was most definitely a step back from the position and seniority she held prior to her departure from the District Attorney’s office, Tami went through the steps to apply for the publicly advertised position and was subsequently ranked number one on the list of applicants.
In January 2009, Troy Held, a former colleague and the current Director of the Department of Child Support Services, heard from a friend that Tami had applied for the publicly advertised position within the District Attorney’s Office. At the time he learned of Tami’s interest in rejoining the workforce, Mr. Held was actively interviewing candidates for the position of Assistant Director within his department. Subsequently, Mr. Held contacted Tami to discuss the position.
Mr. held has at this point already offered the position to several candidates who had declined the offer. After meeting with Tami and discussing her qualifications, passion for public service, extensive courtroom and overall legal expertise, Mr. Held moved forward with offering her the position as Assistant Director of Child Support Services. Child Support Services is a department that is fully funded by state and federal monies and no county general fund money is used to pay for staff or operations.
To be clear, at no time during the discussions of the employment opportunity between Tami and Mr. Held did I speak with Mr. Held, County Executive Officer Tom Miller, anyone within the Department of Personnel, any of my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors nor anyone having anything whatsoever to do with the employment process about this opportunity that had been presented to Tami by Mr. Held.
